At approximately 4:32 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2008, a collision occurred between a freight train and a Metrolink commuter train in the vicinity of Heaterlee Lane and Endora Avenue in Chatsworth, CA. The engineer of the Metrolink train that crashed in a head-on collision, was texting with a teenage mentee moments before the crash, according to a September 14, 2008 article by Foxnews.com, entitled ”Report: Metrolink Engineer Texting with Teen Moments Before Killer Commuter Crash.”According to Foxnews.com, Friday’s rail disaster was the nation’s deadliest in 15 years, killing 25 people, injuring 135 people, and leaving in its wake a mass of smoldering, twisted metal. Metrolink spokeswoman Denise Tyrrell was quoted as saying, “it was a Metrolink engineer that failed to stop at a red signal and that was the probable cause” of the collision. Moreover, according to Tyrrell, “When two trains are in the same place at the same time somebody’s made a terrible mistake.”
